Event includes open mic and all genders are welcome to read. You can bring poetry, a story or prose to share, the only rule is there is a 5 minute time limit. We provide a safe, welcoming environment where writers of all kinds can share their work. Sign up on the night

Our venue is the legendary Open Studio, in Northcote, an institution for culturally amazing gigs (204 High Street, 3070). All attendees must provide proof of vaccination as per state rules.
Denise Chapman is a counternarrative storyteller, poet, critical autoethnographer, and academic who lectures in critical literacy and inclusive creative media at Monash University. She was runner-up at Poetryspective’s 2019 Retro Slam and has presented her artistic work at The Wheeler Centre, Melbourne’s Emerging Writers Festival, RMIT’s Present Tense, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and most recently exhibited her work as a part of the Volume: Bodies of Knowledge project at Brisbane’s Metro Arts. Her creative work continues the traditions of her maternal grandparents Gullah heritage by seeing oral stories, folklore, rhythmic ring shouts and Geechee language as a means for creating windows for survival and liberation.
Katie Lohner is a spoken word and multi-disciplinary artist from Naarm (Melbourne). Her quirky and dynamic performance style has touched audiences including Mother Tongue, Poetryspective, HillsceneLive and Melbourne Spoken Word Poetry Festival. Her poetry has been described as being unencumbered with a sense of freedom and joy. She was a 2018 finalist at The Melbourne Spoken Word Prize. Her practice also extends from poetry to a range of performance art, as well as graphic design and visual arts.
Katie’s word craft brims with intelligence and laughter, leaving audiences with a light heart full of childlike wonder. She’ll make you want to skip home instead of walking.
